Mortarion, Daemon Primarch of Nurgle, like all his brothers was lost to the Emperor prior to the launching of the Great Crusade. His first captain, Typhon, had already given his soul over to Nurgle and plotted to ensnare his Primarch. Stolen from the Emperor's gene forges and scattered to the warp, Mortarion fell to the feudal world of Barbarus. Left with no other choice, Mortarion pledged himself to Nurgle and both he and the Death Guard were reborn as the Plague God's chosen instruments. Barbarus was a world perpetually shrouded in poisonous fog and it was here, fighting the Necromancers of that world that Mortarion would develop his hatred of psykers and his respect for the resilience of man. Though his loathing of psykers had seen him dabble in sorcery in an effort to find weapons against the psykers who would use such powers to evil ends, he resisted the calls of Nurgle, the Chaos God of despair and decay. Typhon, soon to be Typhus, schemed to ensure the Death Guard's fleet was becalmed in the warp on their way to Terra on their way to join the siege of the Emperor's Palace.
